While maintaining Madewell’s beloved brand handwriting, each email was an exercise in suprise-and-delight-ing. ☻
Madewell’s email program accounts for over 20% of the brand’s total revenue. On average, brand emails demand $100,000 a day. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of brand emails deployed each month more than doubled and email subscriber count increased from 2 million to over 3.5 million.
Emails were created on a fortnightly basis in batches of 30-40 at a time. While most emails’ content were outlined ahead of time, 1-2 per week were released off-cadence. These “nimble” emails were opportunities to quickly react and capitalize on customer behaviors; they were designed the same morning they were briefed, then written, routed, proofread, and delivered within 24 hours.
